This week’s show is just an update, plus a reminder to submit your poems for “Second Sunday” by 12pm EST on November 13th.
The next podcast you hear will be coming from Washington, DC, so see you next week!

In transition

October 25, 2005

Well, I’ve begun the long transition from Charleston, SC to Washington, DC. The house has been sold and we’re living in a hotel until we leave early next week.

As a result, my postings here will be few and far between. I’m on a dial-up connnection and man, oh, man am I missing my broadband connection!

The podcast this weekend will actually be interesting since my hardcore podcast equipment has been packed away, and I won’t see it for another month. Aargh! Anyway, keep listening and checking back here at the blog for the latest updates. I’ll try to post something every day or so.

I’m really looking forward to getting to know the poetry scene up in DC. Opportunities abound, I’m sure. Well, the opportunity to meet “everyday poets” abounds everywhere people are. That’s what I love about poetry.

Ok, I’ll talk to you soon.
Will

Stephen Fry on Slam Idol

October 21, 2005

I would highly suggest listening to Simon Toon’s latest “Slam Idol Podcast”. It features a very thought provoking interview with actor/poet Stephen Fry.
Mr. Fry gives his take on modern poetry and gives his reasons as to why a poet needs to study poetry to be a better poet.

“The art of poetry consists of technique”

Learning different techniques, at the very least, allows you to have a greater foundation to build future poetry on. I think a lot of poets shy away from learning different forms and styles of poetry, because they believe that their style is unique. In actuality their style is a technique that they have picked up from influences in their lives and simply added to and tweaked to their liking. “There is nothing new under the sun”.

I encourage all poets to learn the basics of structure and rhythm and apply them to their own works. If you don’t learn something from it, then move on and forget I ever mentioned it. I have the feeling you’ll be a better poet in the end.

Video Poetry

October 19, 2005

Lately I’ve been thinking about doing a periodic (monthly?) poetry video. Something artistic.
Here’s a great example I found on Google Video:

The Poetry of the Suicide of a Poem

The first one I ever saw was on the The-Hold poetry podcast. It went to the back of my mind for a little while then Larry Winfield mentioned his work with video poetry in our interview a few weeks ago. You can hear my curiosity peaked when I ask him about it.

So, I put it to the back of my head again. Then, last week, the video iPod debuts, and I realize that this must be something I need to experiment with. The above example is the direction I’m headed, but I’m thinking about giving it a short film feel. Hmmm…interesting indeed. I’ll keep you updated.
Let me know if you know of anyone else who is doing this. I’d love to check them out.

Listener interview info

October 17, 2005

Well, as you heard in the show, I lost about 10 minutes of my interview with Listener because I forgot to hit the record button. This is actually the second interview I did this with. The first time was while I was interviewing Larry Winfield. Hence the “Yeah, Larry, I did it again” line.

So, to prevent that from happening again, I reworked my hardware setup for my Skype calls. I’m back to a simpler, less confusing setup. The funny thing is that I thought I tried this a few months ago, but couldn’t get it to work. Oh well, it works now, so I shouldn’t have that issue anymore.

Back to the listener interview. Despite my technical difficulties, I felt that this was one of my better shows for some reason. Not sure why, but I just felt good about the finished product. I’ve actually listened to this one a couple of times over. That’s something I never do. Weird.

Anyway, I just added a couple of links in the “Links” section: VocalizedInk.org and some of my favorite podcasts.

Later,
Will
